Barrels, Bathing Suits, and Bragging Rights: Brentwood’s Battle of the Barrel Returns July 3
Brentwood’s fiercest—and wettest—tradition is back. On the evening of Thursday, July 3 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. (or until the last drop is sprayed), firefighters from across the region will square off in a hose-powered showdown during the Battle of the Barrel, proudly sponsored by the Brentwood Volunteer Fire Company.

This splashy spectacle takes place on Brownsville Road between Marylea and Munsey Avenues, and the public is invited to line the sidewalks, cheer on their hometown heroes, and maybe catch a little friendly fire (of the water variety).

What is the Battle of the Barrel?
The Battle of the Barrel is a classic firefighter competition where teams aim high-pressure water streams at a suspended barrel, trying to push it toward the other team’s side. It’s a test of strength, precision, and teamwork—like tug-of-war, but with hoses.
“It’s a fun time to compete against other local departments,” said Emily Columbus of the Brentwood Volunteer Fire Company. “We’re always working together on fire scenes, so it’s a nice competition to have some rivalry instead.”

The Rules of the Rinse
Each team has three members: “One for the nozzle, one backup close to the nozzle man, and then the third stays back to make sure the hose is out from under the front two firefighters’ feet,” explained Columbus. “Newer members want to try their hand on the nozzle and seasoned firefighters know how to stay on the barrel and the tricks of the trade.”
Spectators can expect fast-moving water, fierce competition, and maybe a few soaked socks.
“I remember going to it before I was a firefighter,” Columbus added. “It is quite a great time to be at. The kids love playing in the puddles and watching the water bounce off the barrel as they are battling. Many wear bathing suits for the battle.”

From Historic Rivalries to Modern Fun
Though the competition today is all in good fun, it stems from the gritty, chaotic origins of firefighting. In the 19th century, rival companies would race to fires and sometimes fight each other for the right to extinguish them. Today, the spirit of competition remains—but it ends with high-fives and a shared meal.
“After the winner gets their trophy, Brentwood hosts all the firefighters and stations who were there to a dinner and picnic at our station,” Columbus said. “It’s a great way to start off the 4th of July festivities.”
