Business Spotlight: Zemi Workshop Finds Its Spirit in Brentwood
Call it divine intervention—or maybe just a wrong turn—but Janairis Vazquez didn’t originally plan to open Zemi Workshop in Brentwood.
“I thought the shop was on the whole other side,” laughs owner Vazquez, recalling her first visit to the property. “I think the universe was just planting me in a different spot.”

“I thought the shop was on the whole other side,” laughs owner Vazquez, recalling her first visit to the property. “I think the universe was just planting me in a different spot.”
The universe might have been onto something. That moment of misdirection led to the brand-new holistic wellness shop now open at 2901 Brownsville Road.
Walking into Zemi Workshop feels like stepping into an earthy sanctuary. If you’re lucky, you’ll be greeted by Max, the shop cat. Shelves are lined with handmade soaps, oils, tallow-based skincare, candles, crystals, and lovingly tended houseplants. There’s hand-crafted woodwork—courtesy of her dad, who also inspired much of her drive—and a growing collection of jewelry and small gifts.
Every product is created with purpose and intentionally curated. “I actually like to meditate before making them,” Vazquez says. “I feel like each of them has their own energy.”
The creative spirit behind Zemi runs deep. Vazquez has been making jewelry since she was six, selling bracelets at school and later in hospitals while dealing with serious health issues. She took four years of jewelry-making classes and has been creating ever since.
“Art’s always been a part of me,” she says. “My mom made art. My dad’s been a huge example. He pulled me aside once and said, If you want to be an artist, be an artist.”

The idea for the shop started during the height of the pandemic, when Vazquez lost her job and turned to art as a form of stress relief. She opened an Etsy shop, started sharing her creative process on TikTok, and found her audience.
“Right now, I’m super into skincare because I feel like a little scientist,” she says. “I hand things to people and go, Try this!”

Vazquez, a Level 2 Reiki practitioner, offers healing sessions designed to align chakras and clear emotional and energetic blockages. “I used to be really skeptical about it,” she admits. “For the first time ever, I felt relief when I tried Reiki. A lot of people say it helps with their pain and anxiety.”
In addition to Reiki and handmade goods, Vazquez offers tarot and sketch readings—an intuitive practice she discovered two years ago.
She also plans to bring in more local makers by offering consignment space for other artists and hopes to host workshops soon, where people can make their own jewelry or skincare products to take home.

For Vazquez, who is Puerto Rican, Zemi is a bridge between heritage and healing. The inspiration for the name came during meditation. “I was sitting outside letting my mind wander, and I heard the word. I did my research, and it was like—yup, that’s it.”
Vazquez pours meaning and mindfulness into everything she does—and some serious hustle. She’s also pursuing a degree in psychology, with plans to earn her master’s and eventually offer therapy sessions in the back of the shop.
Even the shop’s signage and decor reflect her hands-on spirit. “I crafted everything with a Cricut and vinyl,” she says proudly. The furniture is mostly recycled or gifted—like the mirror she salvaged from a dumpster and rebuilt into a frame to hold her creative pieces.
The sign above the door reads: Freshen Up Your Spirit—and that’s exactly what Zemi Workshop is here to help you do.
